Christantus Uche Ignites Straightforward Crystal Palace Triumph at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever European campaign, Oliver Glasner's side are learning very quickly. Missing star figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a commanding win that all but guarantees them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
Another victory in their next fixture against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure direct passage to the last 16, especially following a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match provided a chance for several Palace's fringe players to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a well-taken finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, finding the net for the second consecutive succession.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their league season were no match even for a largely second-string Palace lineup. The Londoners were further weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg problems.
Control Established from the Outset
Despite heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A flowing move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close minutes later, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the official waved away the protests.
The formerArsenal man didn't need to wait long to find his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's effort had struck the post.
The home side were clinging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for two agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Wraps Up the Contest
The match was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past a series of weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring with his very first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a glaring chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his senior debut, capping an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
