The Trump phenomenon's most telling and defining moments – not its most crucial, nor cruelest, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of a few weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing all observers his intentions for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions than the White House and then began solo dismantling the eastern section to construct it.
He has done things ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of deaths from his cuts to foreign assistance stands at 600,000 and increasing, and recently research forecast his petroleum strategies would cause deaths another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have risked – genuinely, no previous leader would have imagined – solo demolishing large sections of the presidential residence to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple America's wealthiest, almost all of whom have business with public institutions.
We went from 'the humble will receive the Earth' to 'the meek shall die from cholera'
As bewildering as it is to watch the chief executive seek to颠覆 the traditional concept of democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment among Americans who might not perceive it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations almost a majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have watched across decades while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we were raised with into the total contrary of our understanding of him. Essentially, they transformed an image of love into a symbol of hostility who blesses exactly the harshness that he denounced in scripture; this transformation occurred more gradually, over decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself
So let me first describe the Jesus from my upbringing, because theoretically Jesus is the center within Christian belief, and because the fastest-growing cadre within America might have little sense regarding him as they consider themselves non-believers or uncertain individuals or nones. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; but I do think that exist valuable insights of significant worth within Christian narrative.
It is decidedly not the story of an authoritative monarch emerging; instead, a baby is born to parents without shelter in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to escape secret police. The baby grows up in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his message is about love for others, specifically for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but a concrete one, shown by providing food and protecting. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to offer the additional cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a means to instruct the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing is that if someone steals your outer garment you must offer them your pullover as well.
The evident and direct truth that Christ from scripture calls for a kind of radical love centered on the poor has perpetually caused Christianity somewhat of a scandalous religion: attractive to the masses, but due to its inherent radicalness needing to be restrained. During the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – Protestantism was so prevalent that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Conflict for the Finest of Us
Hence I have become encouraged to witness the steadfast resistance against Trump arise during the previous year. It has served as substantial consolation to participate in developing the initiative that has taken to the streets through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged electorate to show up in numbers during minor elections. We will need to continue it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags during all protests and requests to the highest qualities within national heritage.

America is best defended, in other words, by relationship to the finest about American history, just as Christianity is best defended by reference to what makes it unique and magnificent, specifically the model of Jesus. In both situations does it mean feigning the most negative of both America and Christian faith never occurred; it signifies both modesty and conviction, a combination that genuine American Christians ought to accept.
